Chiropractor Q & A
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractors are trained health professionals who manipulate the spine and other joints to improve the overall function of the body. Often, chiropractors try to address structural or nervous system irritation that may be the cause of pain.
A chiropractic adjustment is a noninvasive procedure in which the chiropractor uses their hands or instruments to stimulate the spine. People usually seek out chiropractors for the following conditions.
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Whiplash injuries
- Arm pain
- Rib pain
- Shoulder pain
- Knee pain
- Foot/ankle pain
- Herniated disc
- Bulging disc
- Protruding disc
Chiropractor appointments are relatively short and do not require any recovery time. You can continue with your normal day after the appointments and may even feel even more refreshed and rejuvenated for the rest of the day.
What can you expect from your first appointment?
You do not need to prepare for your chiropractor appointment except perhaps by wearing comfortable clothing. At the beginning of your appointment, the chiropractor takes a medical history and performs a physical examination.
Be sure to tell your chiropractor about past injuries as well as goals for the sessions. Depending on your health history, your chiropractor may order certain imaging tests like X-rays and/or an MRI.
Once the session begins, you are asked to lie on an adjustment table, and your chiropractor applies pressure to your spinal joints. It is common to hear cracking noises, but let your chiropractor know if you are experiencing any sharp pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Your chiropractor may use several other therapies, including massage, active therapeutic motion, soft tissue mobilization, ice, heat, electric stimulation, ultrasound, class IV cold laser, and spinal decompression.
After the visit, it is common to feel some fatigue or pain. This should resolve within 24 hours and can be addressed with ice packs.
How often do you need to visit the chiropractor?
The typical series of appointments includes 12 treatments. However, some people may benefit from more or less, depending on their specific goals or condition. The timing of appointments can be adjusted to accommodate your schedule.
In-between appointments, your chiropractor may recommend a light exercise routine or nutritional tips to further improve your pain and general condition.
Chiropractic adjustments can improve the flow and comfort of your daily functions and movements.
