Summer’s usually when people get serious about their fitness goals. Shorts and swimsuit season make it a perfect time to get into a regular exercise routine.
But with gyms closed across the state as the Texas temperatures skyrocket, you might think you need to hunker down. Your weight loss goals don’t have to wait, however. At Integrative Medical Group of Texas, we’re here to help you. Our medical weight loss services support you along the way.
Additionally, to help you stay safe and remain on track with your fitness and weight goals, we’ve rounded up four tips to help you exercise safely this summer.
Go out early or late
If your preferred workout time is during your lunch break, it might be time to reevaluate. So you can safely exercise outdoors, consider timing your workouts in the early morning or closer to dusk.
This way, temperatures are as low as possible while you still have plenty of daylight to run, bike, hike, practice yoga, or do whatever activity you prefer.
Hydrate throughout the day
It’s easy to remember to drink water when you’re working out. Your body tells you it needs hydration through thirst. But by the time you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.
Make a point to drink water throughout the day so that when you do get to your exercise session, your body already has plenty of fluids to use. As a good rule of thumb, divide your weight in half — that’s the number of ounces you should aim to consume by the day’s end.
Listen to your body
While it’s great for your fitness to find your edge during workouts, summer might not be the time to seek out that line. The last thing you want in this heat is to find that you’re totally spent a mile from home.
The heat takes its toll, and it’s important that you don’t underestimate it. Rather than trying to launch into a full workout, ease yourself in. Start with shorter distances or less strenuous routines until you have a good idea of how the higher temperatures affect your endurance.
Also remember that you can take breaks partway through your workout if your body is telling you to slow down.
Be sun safe
You’re probably in the habit of applying sunscreen before a day at the beach, lake, or pool. But don’t forget that anytime you exercise outside, you’re exposing your skin to ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Avoid a sunburn and ward off skin cancer by being sun safe. That means applying sweat-proof sunscreen at least 15 minutes before your workout or wearing UV-blocking clothing to shield your skin.
